Campaign launched to promote handicrafts as Nowruz gifts

A social campaign has been launched to promote using domestic handicrafts as gifts to celebrate Nowruz, the Iranian New Year.

The campaign, which has been launched by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism, is intended to create a change and to help the handicrafts sector to emerge from a prolonged recession created by the coronavirus pandemic for more than a year now.

The motto of this campaign is translated into “I will give handicrafts as gift this Nowruz”, and citizens are asked to use handicrafts as a beautiful and lasting Nowruz gift to support the employment of craftspeople.

Gift-giving tradition in a new year symbolizes wealth, prosperity, fertility, or luck. Perhaps the most enduring image of Nowruz is about socializing, deepening family bonds, and meeting up with old friends mostly in their homes.

Over the past couple of years, dozens of high-quality Iranian handicrafts have been honored with the UNESCO Seal of Excellence. With 14 entries, Iran ranks first globally for the number of cities and villages registered by the World Crafts Council, as China with seven entries, Chile with four, and India with three ones come next.
